Mission of parents of suicide victim Hanna Clark now to prevent other teen suicides

FATE – Hanna Clark, the 15-year-old Rockwall High School 9th grade volleyball player who took her own life at her home April 25 – after her boyfriend broke up with her – was a typical fun-loving, impulsive teenager, say her parents.

“She had just never faced rejection before,” explained her mother, Raina Clark, tearfully, when she and her husband, Tim Clark, invited this reporter to visit them recently in hopes of increasing awareness about the serious problem of teen suicides.

“She just made a terrible mistake,” said her father. “I really don’t think she even thought about what she was doing. She was just suddenly in terrible pain and wanted to end it quickly.”

Her mother said she was at a store and had just received a text from Hanna of some things she needed just 30 minutes before she took her life.

“If she texted me a list of things she needed 30 minutes before she died, she couldn’t have been thinking about taking her life at that point,” she said.

The Clarks explained now that she is gone, they have concluded their mission and what Hanna would want them to do is to increase awareness about the large number of teen suicides and to try to prevent more tragedies.

For that reason, the Clarks, many family members and friends have organized the non-profit Hanna4Hope Foundation, which is hosting its first annual Color Splash 5K Run/Walk event, Sept. 14, at 9 am, at Squabble Creek Trail, 2201 Lakeshore Dr.  American Idol star Jason Castro has now confirmed he will even perform at the event.

“We believe Hanna was taken from us at such a young age for a reason,” they explained.  “Our faith and belief in God gives us hope that we will see our daughter again in that glorious place called Heaven. We want people to know that our daughter was very special and the impact she had on people in the past and now – through the Hanna4Hope Foundation – will be absolutely profound.”

“Hanna was not deeply depressed like the majority of teenage suicide victims,” said her mother. “She was just the opposite. She was always smiling and happy. She loved playing on the volleyball team, listening to music and doing things with her family and friends.”

But Hanna had never had a boyfriend break up with her before and that was a new experience in her life, she explained. Hanna had broken up with her only other boyfriend.

“He is a very nice boy,” Raina said. “He had come over to our home several times and was very polite and friendly. He was extremely upset about what happened. We still see and speak with him frequently now. He’s even involved with our Hanna4Hope youth committee.”

The Clarks explained that they had a very close relationship with Hanna, went to Lake Pointe Church together, plus had many discussions with her about the problems associated with drugs, bullying and other teen issues.

“But we never talked with her about suicide,” said Raina. “It’s just not a topic that anybody talks about. I was shocked when I learned that teen suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth 10 to 24 years-old, 15 to 24-years-old and fourth leading cause among 10-14 year-olds.

The Clarks said that’s one major reason they decided to launch their Hanna4Hope Foundation.

“People need to talk about teen suicides and increase awareness about what a terrible problem it is,” they said.

On Aug. 26, from 11 am until 10 pm, Hanna4Hope will be holding a simultaneous fundraiser at three Chili’s Restaurants in Rockwall, Greenville and Sulphur Springs. Fifteen percent of each bill will be donated to Hanna4Hope when customers bring in a flier or explain they are there for the Hanna4Hope fundraiser.

“Hanna’s favorite verse in the Bible was Philippians 4:13, which is: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ We apply this verse to our lives every day just as Hanna would want us to,” smiled the Clarks.

Her parents have now made it their mission to increase awareness about how many thousands of teens are committing suicide annually as they try to prevent additional tragedies.

“She had just never faced rejection before,” said her mother. “We had talked with her about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, bullying and other teen issues but never discussed suicide with her. It’s just not a topic that anyone talks about.”

“I was shocked when I learned that suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth, 10 to 24 years of age, third among 15-24 year-olds and fourth leading cause among 10-14 year-olds.”

Logan Thatcher becomes 6th son in family to earn Eagle Scout award

HEATH – Earning an Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America has always been quite an accomplishment for a young man and his parents. It requires a great deal of hard work, discipline and a comparatively few Boy Scouts actually ever achieve the rank.

So it is absolutely remarkable when all six sons in one family earn their Eagle Scout awards, which was achieved Aug. 25 when the youngest and sixth son of Heath City Manager Ed Thatcher and his wife, Debrah, received his Eagle at a Court of Honor at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon).

Logan Thatcher, 18, a recent Rockwall-Heath High School graduate and former varsity golf team member for several years, earned 22 merit badges, was a Venturer member of Crew 157 and attended Camp Constantin on Possum Kingdom Lake on his way to earning his award. For his required service project, he installed warning plaques on storm drains in Heath.

He will attend Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg ID this fall and plans to serve a voluntary two-year mission for his Church after completing two semesters there.

His friend and Heath High senior, Barrett Browning, 17, also received his Eagle in the ceremony. His service project was to gather and donate movies and video games to help build a media game room for children who are patients at Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas. Barrett said his father is a physician there and Barrett frequently saw kids who were bored and had too much time to think. He felt inspired to complete the project to make them happy.

Logan told TheRockwallNews.com that he knew one day he would be an Eagle Scout because his five brothers earned their Eagle rank and he always had the same expectation of himself.

“I have learned leadership skills that will go with me and help me on my mission and in college and throughout life,” he explained. “One of the important things I learned is how to work with others to accomplish things. I also learned how important others are to me in order for me to progress and actually earn the Eagle Scout award.”

“If all of my Boy Scout friends and adult leaders who showed up and helped me with my Eagle project had not participated, it would have  been next to impossible to accomplish the service project. I am really grateful for all the help and I have committed to help others when they do their projects.”

His five older brothers earned their Eagles while in their teens between 1992 and 2013. The Thatchers said they raised their six sons to become Eagle Scouts because the Boy Scout program teaches hard work, leadership, and the importance of staying active, being involved in good activities and keeping themselves morally and physically clean. It is also the adopted activity for the boys of their church.

“As the boys parents we felt it was important for our boys to be Cub Scouts and then Boy Scouts and to work hard to attain the rank of Eagle,” they said. “The Boy Scout program helped our boys increase their confidence – they learned they were able to accomplish hard tasks. What they learned and the experiences they gained by being a Boy Scout has helped them obtain college degrees, learn foreign languages and ultimately succeed by getting employment and becoming a contributing citizen of our country.”

“As each one of the boys earned their Eagle Award, that award served as motivation for the younger brothers to also attain the award. The Boy Scout program is the adopted activity for the young men in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, as active members in this Church, our sons were presented with the challenge to earn their Eagles.”

The Thatchers said they encouraged and participated with their sons to help them stay active and motivated in scouting.

Mother Debbie served as a Cub Scout den leader, while father Ed served as Scoutmaster for several years and attended many of his sons’ camp-outs, as well as each of the boys’ week-long summer camps. He is a Woodbadge-trained adult leader, served on the Tawakoni District Committee for several years and currently serves on the East Trinity Trails Committee. As an adult scout, he has earned the Silver Beaver Award and District Award of Merit.

Besides earning Eagle Scout awards, Logan’s five older brothers all served two-year missions for their Church,  graduated from college and are now working professionally and raising their own families.

Benjamin Thatcher was the first son to earn his Eagle, Oct. 4, 1992, at the age of 14. At the time he was a freshman at Greenville High, a member of Troop 326, a member of the Order of the Arrow, earned 23 merit badges and attended Camp Strake, Camp Cherokee and Philmont Scout Ranch in NM. For his service project he provided age-appropriate educational material and toys for the nursery program of his church.

He served a two-year church mission to France, obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of North Texas and works currently as Assistant City Manager in Southlake TX.

Current Rockwall County Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Thatcher was the second son to earn his Eagle, Jan. 3, 1997, when he was 16 and a junior at Greenville High. He was an Explorer Scout of Post 326, a member of the Order of the Arrow, earned 24 merit badges and attended Camps Grayson, Cherokee, Constantin and Philmont. He acquired and installed a permanent lighted flag pole and plaque at his church in Greenville for his service project.

He served a two-year mission to Switzerland – Geneva, obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University in Provo UT and his Doctor of Juris Prudence or law degree from Texas Wesleyan Law School in Ft. Worth.

The third Eagle Scout was Christopher Thatcher, who received it in a joint Court of Honor with his brother, Jon, in 1997, at the age of 15 when he was a freshman at Greenville High. A Varsity Scout member of Team 326 and member of the Order of the Arrow, he earned 28 merit badges and attended Camps Cherokee, Constantin, Grayson and Philmont. He coordinated a Christmas tree recycling program for the City of Greenville (Greenville Recycles) in 1995.

He next served a two-year mission to Mexico – Tampico, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Phoenix and currently works as a Municipal Court clerk in Plano TX.

Joshua Thatcher, the fourth son to earn his Eagle, was also 15 and a freshman at Greenville High when he received his award Jan. 10, 1998. He earned 24 merit badges, was a Varsity Scout member of Team 326, belonged to the Order of the Arrow, plus attended Camps Cherokee, Constantin, Grayson and Philmont. He acquired and placed reference books and materials in the Greenville Family History Library of his church.

He served as a missionary for two years in Italy – Catania, obtained his undergraduate degree from BYU and then his medical degree from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He  is now a doctor in residency at Boston University Hospital.

Fifth son, Cameron Thatcher, received his Eagle May 14, 2003, when he was 17 and a senior at Greenville High. He was a Venturer member of Crew 326, a Member of the Order of the Arrow, earned 21 merit badges and attended Camps Cherokee, Constantin, Grayson and Philmont. For his service project he provided appropriate educational materials and toys for the nursery program of his Church.

He served a two-year mission to the Ukraine -Kyiv, received his undergraduate degree from BYU-Idaho and is currently an investment banker for Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in Dallas.

ROCKWALL -Every child needs a hero, but abused and neglected children need a Superhero.

Consequently, Lone Star CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is currently seeking cash and in-kind sponsors, plus teams and individuals, to sign up, donate and volunteer to support their annual Lone Star CASA Superhero 5K Race/Fun Run and Kids SuperDash Nov. 2 at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

Although costumes are optional, participants are encouraged to organize Superhero teams and dress as your favorite Superheroes.

The event is one of many fundraisers held annually by various CASA organizations across the state. Registration begins at 7:30 and the Family Fun Run at 8:30 am, followed by the 5K at 9 am.

You can preregister or sign up online as a sponsor or volunteer here.

According to Lone Star CASA Executive Director Lucille Bell, funds raised are used to benefit children from Rockwall and Kaufman Counties who come into the court system primarily as a result of abuse or neglect.

On behalf of the children, Lone Star CASA serves as the eyes and ears of the court and actively supports the development, growth, and continuation of programs designed to prevent abuse and other trauma.

In support of this vision and mission, Lone Star CASA recruits, screens, trains and supervises volunteers to serve either as Guardians ad Litem for children, assist attorney Guardians ad Litem in this representation, or serve as an independent third party “friend of the court.” Lone Star CASA promotes and enhances mutual coordination and communication among foster parents, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, and the biological families of foster children in Rockwall and Kaufman Counties.

In 2012 Bell said there were 146 children in Rockwall and Kaufman Counties in the court system who had a CASA Advocate. But there were not enough CASA volunteers for 50 children, so more are needed. With a CASA volunteer, a child is half as likely to languish in the foster care and child welfare system, and that much more likely to find a safe, permanent home.

The first CASA program established in Texas was Dallas CASA in 1980. During that decade, 14 CASA programs were started in Texas.

Today, the CASA movement has evolved into one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country. In Texas, there are 69 local CASA programs with more than 7,000 volunteers serving 22,000 foster children.

New Royse City billboard ArrangementFinders.com Chicago billboard Philadelphia billboard Los Angeles billboard

ROYSE CITY – A provocative new billboard featuring porn star Bree Olson (a former girlfriend of Charlie Sheen) was erected over the weekend by Primary Media eastbound on I-30 which reads:  “Get Out of Prostitution Be a SUGAR BABY!” (Click on above left photo to see more clearly)

It’s just two miles east of Royse City High School in Hunt County – likely for a specific reason.

Advertising the controversial website ArrangementFinders.com, a Toronto-based match-making service which charges men $49-$79 per month to meet women, the website claims to be “The #1 Source of Mutually Beneficial Arrangements.” It is owned by Avid Life Media, which also owns dating website AshleyMadison.com, which advocates adulterous relationships for married men and women.

“Arrangement Finders is an exclusive service that connects men and women looking for MBA – Mutually Beneficial Arrangements®,” the Homepage reads. We’re 100% secure, anonymous and risk free – making it simple for you to achieve the unique arrangement you desire.”

The website Home page (shown above) features an image of the derriere of a slender woman wearing a black thong, black stockings and high heels with a man seated in a chair looking at her. The headline reads, “Intimacy With A Twi$t!”

On Google, Arrangement Finders describes itself as “an online dating site that connects Young, Beautiful Women with Successful Men.” Women can sign up on the website for free. The website claims to have over 2 million members.

Marketing director AJ Perkins told ABC News in May that the company had erected a billboard near the campus of UCLA targeting girls, 18-35, looking to make money in a short time frame. The message read:  “Hey Students, Need a Summer Job? Date a SUGAR DADDY.” (See photo above, second row middle)

“Los Angeles is really known for that lifestyle, for sugar daddies,” he said.

Over 1,400 new females signed up for the service in 48 hours, as a result. Many of the men on the website paid for their rent, living expenses and even made loan payments.

“Prostitution or pay-for-sex is very transactional based,” he explained in response to critics who say the site is a prostitution site in disguise. “This is more of an ongoing relationship that occurs between a man and a woman. It’s not like a one-night stand.”

The website, founded in 2010, caused controversy in Chicago in February when it placed a billboard with the message, “Because the best job is a b**w job.” (See above photo)

It was removed twice after property owners asked the billboard company to take it down. A City Alderman said he simply asked the company to take it down to be a “good neighbor” and it did.

A company spokesperson who would only provide her name as Elissa said “Dallas is one of the sugar daddy hubs in the U.S.  We’ve been working for over a year to get into the market.”

She said the Royse City billboard is scheduled to be up for four weeks but could not explain why it was placed so close to Royse City High School.

On Arrangement Finders, women sign up for free and men pay $49-$79 per month. They pay to “communicate with these women,” said Chief Marketing Officer AJ Perkins, and the website offers a free platform for them to privately converse. Perkins cited 2 million members and said the website caters both to single and married men, both “looking for an arrangement.” Men generally pay for things like gifts, or a bill, or help with a loan, Perkins said.

“It’s about the relationships that people don’t talk about,” Perkins said.

He explained female subscribers in two ways: College students ages 21 to 28; and single moms ages 21 to 30. Male subscribers are age 30 and up, “with a sweet spot for 40,” Perkins said.

A call was made yesterday to find out by TheRockwallNews.com to the billboard company, Primary Media, but no call was returned. Calls were also made and emails sent yesterday to the Royse City Mayor and City Manager but they were not returned.

PAULDEN AZ – A married couple from Terrell were killed in a private plane crash Friday afternoon about 100 miles north of Phoenix when witnesses say their six passenger Cessna 340 appeared to hit some trees or perhaps a radio tower.

Plane owner James Parrish, 57, and his wife, Lisa Parrish, 54, of Terrell were among the four people who died. Also killed were Mike Hughes, 65, a retired Denver police officer and gun safety training business owner, and his wife, Joy Hughes, 63, of Paulden and Aurora CO.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn said witnesses saw the plane clip some trees before it appeared to explode on impact. Other witnesses said the plane may have struck a radio tower on the grounds of the Gunsite firearms training academy, their scheduled destination. Hughes was a firearms instructor at Gunsite.

The plane left Bullhead City in northwestern Arizona Friday morning and was expected to land at Prescott AZ Airport,  according to D’Evelyn. Both couples were scheduled to arrive at Gunsite later in the day.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

Hwy. 549, just west of Cain Middle School.

Starting at 7 pm, the program entitled “A Century of Honor” will begin with scouting stations throughout the building at which Scouts will explain the different programs and activities in which they have participated during the year.

At 8 pm the event will feature a multi-media production – broadcast live by satellite – for the benefit of thousands of Scouting organizations across the country. With a cast of hundreds of Scouts, the 85-minute performance will feature inspiring original music, Scout choirs, historical reenactments and videos highlighting important events, service and achievements from the past century telling the story of Scouting in our nation and communities. Special guests will include national BSA leaders and board members, as well as members of the First Presidency of the Church.

“We will be celebrating 100 years of service to God and country with food, games, fun, Scout craft displays and more,” said Mark Blackhurst, District Commissioner for East Trinity Trails District. “Plus all members of the Scouting family are invited to experience a spectacular new production celebrating the history and values that make us one.”

For those who can’t attend the program at the Church, you can view the program during or after the broadcast at:  www.scouts100.lds.org.

In 1907 Sir Robert Baden-Powell began the Boy Scout movement in England, and in 1910 the Boy Scouts of America was founded. The Church became the first sponsor of Scouting in the U.S. in 1913 and is now the largest sponsoring BSA organization with more than 430,000 boys and young men enrolled.

Church Pres. Thomas S. Monson, who has served on the BSA National Executive Board longer than any other member, said to those young men:  “Scouting brings out the best in each of us. You’ve learned much from Scouting. Live what you’ve learned and will continue to learn. Help others to hike the trails, to keep steadfast in the paths of truth, of honor, of duty, that all of you can soar together on eagles’ wings.”

ROCKWALL – The public is invited to participate in the sixth annual Christian Corneau “Go the Distance” Memorial 5K and Fun Runs Nov. 16 to raise funds for children and families who cannot otherwise afford to participate in YMCA programs, beginning at 8 am at the JER Chilton YMCA, 1210 N. Goliad St.

Advance prices are $15 per person for the Fun Run and $25 for the 5K, or $30 for the 5K on race day. Registration begins at 7 am at the YMCA.

This year the Runs will specifically raise funds for the YMCA’s Angel Camp, for special needs children, ages 5-18.

You can sign up online at RockwallRunningCenter.com, call the JER Chilton YMCA for details at 972-772-9622 or visit the JERChiltonYMCA website.

The event honors the memory of the son of active Y members Max and Michelle Corneau of Rockwall. Fourteen-year-old Christian died after being struck by a car while skateboarding near his home, Nov. 8, 2006.

According to the YMCA, he played trumpet in the Rockwall High School Orange Wave Marching Band, was enrolled in the Gifted and Talented program and served on the Student Council. As a freshman, he was voted “Most Unique” – and for good reason. His sense of style and fashion set him apart, as did his adventurous soul and his taste in music. He played guitar, enjoyed reading, writing, running, photography, snowboarding and skateboarding. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 83.

“He was sensitive and caring, always concerned about the well being of others. In the short time he was alive, he lived life to the fullest – always with abundant passion. And he gave the best hugs,” said his mother, Michelle. “He had a way of holding on to you and not letting go that made you feel the sincerity of his embrace.”
